Psoriasis is a skin condition that can last for years and years. The most common areas affected are the scalp, arms, legs, face and eyebrows. This condition causes extremely dry scaly patches that itch and easily become inflamed.

There is no known cause for this condition. There are several treatment options that seem to quiet the symptoms. It may take a few trial and error runs to find a product that will work for you.  





Creams and lotions are still one of the strongest contenders for the successful treatment of Psoriasis. Coal tar is a very prominent ingredient in most of the creams and lotions that are on the market used to treat psoriasis. Typically you can find over the counter Psoriasis medication or you can opt for prescription strength Psoriasis medication from your dermatologist both will likely contain coal tar, although the strength will vary.  


Depending on what kind of health insurance you have and how much it will  cover will probably dictate to you whether you opt for the prescription medication or the OTC.  


There are some oral medications that you can take and even some injections that you can also use to control Psoriasis.  



What is Coal Tar? 


Coal tar is a by product of the processing of coal. It is used as a treatment for psoriasis, dandruff and other skin maladies. Coal tars are very complex and contain a slew of chemicals that are thought to treat successfully Psoriasis. 


Coal tar is highly flammable because it is high viscosity so caution should always be used  around flames. 


The primary difference between OTC medications containing coal tar and prescription medications lies in the amount of coal tar present in the formula. Coal tar is delivered usually in a petroleum based lotion or cream.  




Oral Medication 


Acitretin, is an oral drug that is used to treat psoriasis although it is not successful in all cases it can be used with great results by many folks. Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressive drug that is often used with transplant patients. It has shown real promise in the treatment of wide spread Psoriasis. The effects are almost immediate, the down side with this drug is that the side effects can be toxic, and once you stop taking it the Psoriasis flares right back up.  



Injection Psoriasis Medication 


Drugs that are injected for the treatment of Psoriasis are relatively new but show great promise. They are marketed under the names Enbrel, Humira, Remicade and Amevive. These biologic’s work to suppress an overactive immune system which is believed to be the cause of Psoriasis. Treatment protocol varies depending on the spread of the condition and patient response.
